In the cold, grey and damp months of winter it is only normal to want a warm and cosy home with instant hot water on demand. This not only helps to lift those cold winter blues, but it helps keep you healthier in the winter months too. Having your boiler at the right temperature in winter is essential for keeping your heating system running at maximum efficiency. It can also help keep your energy costs low. In addition, it can also help extend the lifespan of your boiler.

So, what boiler temperature should you have in winter?

For your flow temperature you should have it set between 60°C and 70°C. This is much higher than the actual temperature in your radiators. However, it is because the water will gradually lose heat as it circulates around your home. If you can put the flow temperature of your boiler down from 70°C to 60°C in the winter months, you can enhance your energy efficiency by 4%.

When it comes to your thermostatic temperature, the ideal temperature is down to personal preference. That said, a comfortable temperature is between 19°C and 21°C. Please note, the higher temperatures you put your boiler too, the more likely corrosion is as the natural chemical reactions and accelerated. This is the case for much higher temperatures.

If you have a cylinder boiler you will be likely to have a single dial to regulate both the flow and the thermostatic temperature of your boiler in the winter months. This should be set at around 60°C. If you have an older or larger property, you may want to set the temperature higher. The maximum safe temperature is 67°C. It’s a good idea to avoid setting it under 60°C because this creates the perfect breeding ground for bacteria.
